Considering an AC Installation?

What You Need to Know When It’s Time for an AC Installation

Air conditioners provide relief from sweltering temperatures and protect homeowners from heat-related illnesses and even death. Children under 4 or people over 65 years are especially at risk of heatstroke. Air conditioning filters out allergens and pollutants, and reduces indoor humidity, reducing allergy and asthma attacks.

If you are considering an AC installation, read on to learn how the installation works, why you should seek AC services, and how to maintain your AC system.

What Happens During an Air Conditioner Installation

An HVAC technician will be able to recommend the best air conditioning unit for your home and needs. During the installation process, your HVAC technician will take into account factors such as necessary BTUs, wall strength, and leaving adequate space around the unit.

This is the standard installation process:

  • air conditioner installationAfter the right location for an indoor unit is selected, a hole is cut through the wall to pass pipes to the outdoor unit.
  • The mounting plate for the indoor unit is secured. Use a pencil to mark locations for screw holes on the wall. Drill holes and screw the mounting plate in.
  • By lifting the AC’s cover and front panel, the indoor unit’s electrical connections can be assessed.
  • The pipes and cable are passed through the hole in the wall and connected to their designated spots in the indoor unit as stated in the manual.
  • The outdoor unit is placed on and secured to a concrete or plastic pad on the ground, not far from the hole in the wall so that piping and cable can easily reach.
  • All piping and cable is connected between the two units.
  • To complete the installation, air and humidity from the refrigerant circuit is bled. This is done by removing caps from 2-way and 3-way valves and the service port.
  • Finally, clamps are used to secure the piping to the wall. Any gaps left in the hole are sealed.  The AC is ready for use.

It’s best to hire a professional to install your AC system for you. An HVAC technician can recommend the proper AC unit for your home, and can usually install it in just a day or two. When installed by a professional, you will have peace of mind that your system is safe and reliable.

HVAC Maintenance to Maximize Your System

Maintaining your HVAC system is important. You will maximize airflow, ensure your unit has a long lifespan, and avoid extra repair expenses by following these steps:

  • hvac maintenanceRegularly replace or clean the AC filter. Dirty filters prevent adequate airflow and reduce the efficiency of the system. Replacing a worn-out filter can minimize the energy consumption of your AC by up to 15%.
  • The outdoor evaporator and condenser coils of an AC can harbor dirt and debris. Check your coils and clean them often.
  • Coil fins bend easily and can cause airflow blocks. A fin comb is a tool that helps straighten them out.
  • Condensate drains carry the water out. Clogged drains result in leaks and should be inspected for buildup regularly.

Your air conditioning system should be inspected and maintained by a certified technician annually. This way, you’ll know your unit will run safely and reliably all season long.
